Rakesh Roshan: No clicking photos on my set!

By Hindustan Times

The third installment of Hrithik Roshan’s superhero franchise, Krrish 3, is among the most awaited under-production films in this day and age. So it’s not surprising that filmmaker Rakesh Roshan is meticulously guarding his actors’ looks.

Banning cellphones from the sets isn't extraordinary. But he has gone a step further by imposing a strict ‘no visitors’ policy at his shooting location. He apparently has also banned the actors’ staff and the crew — including make-up artistes and hairstylists — from clicking referencing pictures to take care of continuity within the characters’ looks.

“Generally, during make-up or hairstyling, we click pictures and keep them as references for later shoot dates (to verify consistency). But we aren’t allowed to try this at the sets anymore. We’ve been told that the production team will give us the reference pictures if needed,” says a member of 1 of the actors’ entourage.

Roshan senior’s warnings don't seem to be to be taken lightly, as a star’s staff member discovered. He was on the receiving end of the director’s ire when he casually tried to click an actor’s picture: “Roshan sir was really unhappy. He made her (the staffer) delete the image immediately and told her to not do it within the future,” adds our source.

However, despite being handled like a top-secret military project, there was some discuss Kangana Ranaut’s look within the film. She plays a superhero, along with her look apparently inspired by Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft avatar. Vivek Oberoi essays the a part of a villain who will seemingly be stuck to a wheelchair within the first 1/2 the film.

When contacted, Rakesh says, “It’s nothing new. I’ve always guarded actors’ looks in all my films, and I’ve never allowed any visitors at the sets. It’s true that no person is permitted to click pictures on location.”

Kajol was never approached for Son of Sardaar

By Hindustan Times

A recent media report had stated that Son of Sardaar's director Ashwni Dhir had first approached Kajol for the lead role opposite Ajay Devgn within the movie.

The report even went directly to say that Kajol declined the movie as a result of her household commitments and suggested Sonakshi's name instead.
However, there isn't an iota of truth on this news, says the film's spokesperson.

Sonakshi was always the unique and only collection of the director for the part opposite Ajay Devgn. The team always had Sonakshi in mind for this role. She was the primary heroine who was approached and he or she gave a nod to the film immediately. News about every other actress being approached for the role is really untrue.

Son of Sardaar directed by Ashwni Dhir and Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt and Juhi Chawla is gifted by Viacom 18 Movies & Eros International and produced by Ajay Devgn Ffilms and YRV Media Pvt Ltd. The movie is slated for a Diwali release on November 13 this year.

I wish I had made Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

By HT

In a never-before tete-a-tete, Sanjay Leela Bhansali opens up at the agony of watching his sister's directorial debut being delayed and why he's more than happy with the film.

It has taken your sister Bela an excellent ten years to direct her first film. LOTS OF PEOPLE blame you for the delay?

Things happen after they are destined to happen. I'M aware that folks thought I USED TO BE the banyan tree which does not allow another tree to grow in its shade. The concept that individuals held me accountable for my sister's career not starting up killed me from inside. You would be surprised to understand that she held my hand and introduced me to the wonders of cinema. She took me to the FTII and he or she introduced into the film industry. I owe everything I'M today to her. Maybe I USED TO BE fortunate to have directed a movie before her. But rightfully she will need to have directed before me.

You will have prodded her to direct her film long before?
At times I used to wonder whether she was taking see you later to direct a movie because she spent such a lot time editing my films. But there has been nothing I MAY do. Bela was always a part of my creativity. She edited all my films until Black after which she decided it was time for her to direct her own film. She was always very clear that she desired to start as an editor after which direct a movie. She desired to direct a movie only once I made Devdas. Still, there has been a nagging feeling inside me that I COULD be slowing down her creative journey by holding directly to her within the capacity of an editor for my films. I ACTUALLY missed her editing in Saawariya and Guzaarish.

I believe you and Bela had violent physical fights over the editing of your films?
Oh yes (laughs). I USED TO BE like a tiger protecting inch of my footage. She was ruthless. She would tell me on my face that certain things needed to go. She ceased to be a sister and have become an editor. We've gone at one another like two cats with our horrified assistants seeking to separate us from all sides. We were obnoxious within the editing room. But she made the best decisions. And you can now see that very same ruthless economy of expression in her own film. Her film is solely 1 hour 45 minutes long, not a minute longer than it had to be. I miss her within the editing room. But if I saw what she had directed I'M glad she has moved on.

How do you are feeling when she is finally ready along with her film?
Bela's film is infinitely superior to my first film Khamoshi: The Musical. I wish I had made Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi. I'M too numb to react. The past few weeks has been a whirlwind of activities. I'M within the means of starting my very own film too. So it's just like the birth of twins. I'M super-excited, super-happy and super-nervous. We were planning Bela's film Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi for 8 years. Only I DO KNOW what I agony I've suffered in these 8 years. The delay wasn't only because she is my sister. Some actors walked out of Shirin Farhadâ?¦I'd rather not speak about these ugly things. Because we finally succeeded in getting the easiest cast. All of us worked with the courage of conviction, so no grudges against folks who allow us to down. I WILL NOT imagine Shirin Farhad happening with another two actors except Boman Irani and Farah Khan. They're so entertaining that I USED TO BE tempted to cast them as my Romeo and Juliet, if only Rome and Juliet were a little bit older.

You're also producing a movie on Mary Kom?
This is my first biographical film. And it is the story of somebody very special, someone who has done our country very proud. Even cinematically, no Indian film on a lady boxer have been made so far, though within the West Clint Eastwood directed that wonderful film Million Dollar Baby. So I'M really waiting for it. My art director Omang Kumar came to me with the topic. He were researching Mary Kom's life for over a year. She is outstanding. A FEMININE boxing world champion, a housewife and a mother of 2. It's amazing what number of roles women can juggle with. I've seen my mother play such a lot of roles. Mary's story could be very inspiring. After I read Omang's script, I connected to it immediately. However it could be very difficult to cast any actress as Mary Kom.

Your sister's film releases just when you find yourself able to direct your next film Ram Leela?
First, the title isn't final. Secondly, yes this is a hectic. And i'm over-worked. But I'M enjoying every minute of it. And Bela's film is as much mine as hers. But yeah, I'm also engaged on my film. And that is the reason demanding when my sister is venturing out along with her first film.

Coincidentally you too are venturing out with a light-hearted film, very far far from the grave problems with Devdas, Black and Guzaarish?
My next film could be very young, very breezy. It is a very different tackle Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. I'M really waiting for attending to it. But Devdas, Black and Guzaarish weren't serious films. Yes, they handled alcoholism, death and self-destruction. But they were happy films. They raised serious issues but never forgot the laughter and sunshine. During Black, Rani and that i would laugh such a lot between shots we'd have tears rolling down our cheeks. Watching Bela shoot with Boman and Farah was equally entertaining. For all those who find themselves wondering, why Farah Khan when she has no acting experience my answer is, 'Watch her comic timing with Boman'. Farah is as entertaining on screen as she's in person.

Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi recommends love past an age not socially permissible in our society. Do you're thinking that love is feasible after 45?
Why not? I REALLY LIKE Bela's concept of affection striking two people who find themselves seen as past the age of marriage. Love can strike at 45 or 85. I'M 49 and i'm still looking ahead to like to happen.

Arbaaz on turning director for Salman's Dabangg 2

By HT

Initial anxiety has made way for euphoria. Dabangg 2 is over 50% complete and primary time director is just about in his elements. Along with his confidence being further enhanced over a time period and finding himself within the thick of items while directing his superstar brother within the type of Salman Khan who's riding high on his fourth century in a row with Ek Tha Tiger still going strong, Arbaaz says that he just went with the flow in place of over-calculating his moves.

"See, there can be specific amount of tension that includes every job. It was there once I turned actor 15 years back with Daraar. Then it was also there after I opened my production house for Dabangg. So it was but natural to be fascinated about how things would appear to be once I start calling the shots. However, greater than anything else, it was a sense of positivism that surrounded me", says Arbaaz in a calm tone.

In fact one half-expected the actor to be either slowed down by the enormity of affairs or being super-charged about being mid-way during the shoot of a movie which, by all arguments, is definitely probably the most awaited before the year involves a close.

"Abhi to bass shuruaat hai but something is bound that I WOULD LIKE to be engulfed by positive people and positive energy. That helps you do things better and be clearer about what you would like to do. As opposed to proclaiming that 'Oh, so what is the big deal in calling the shots', it's better to guage your decision on an each day basis", he says.

Though it was always in his mind that he would turn a director one day, the ripples due to Abhinav Kashyap opting out of the film ended in Arbaaz stepping in immediately. Though this meant that now he needed to balance out his twin jobs of being a producer in addition to a director with an added pressure of being solely in control of a franchise as big as Dabangg, he also benefited immensely because the development turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Smiles Arbaaz, "THERE HAS BEEN a massive reason for my desire of calling the shots. As an actor, I had discovered during last 15 years that I USED TO BE fascinated more with what went backstage than in front of it. I DISCOVERED it to be more creative. As an actor, sometimes I felt a bit restricted as I USED TO BE probably not up to speed over the jobs that I NEEDED to do. There has been some progress though once I started production because I DISCOVERED a bit more control coming my way. I always knew that sooner or later, I MIGHT turn director. After all, I COULD NOT was relegated to being producer for the remainder of my life."

By Hindustan Times

NEW SONG: Saaiyaan from Kareena Kapoor's Heroine delights

By Hindustan Times

Madhur Bhandarkar hasn't really needed strong music for his films, for he compensates for everything that his movie lacks in his plot, direction and acting.

For his movie Fashion (2008), there have been two very strong songs within the film that finally came to become big musical hits- Kuch Khaas Hai and Mar Jaawan.

This time around, it sounds as if Madhur Bhandarkar needed to take care of music, for the reason that his upcoming movie, Heroine, is ready an Indian film industry or Bollywood actress, and Bollywood is defined by its songs.

And he has focussed pretty well.

Heroine's first song Halkat Jawani is already creating waves with its catchy tune and racy picturisation.
Kareena Kapoor

With the Halkat fever still continuing, a brand new song from Heroine, Saaiyaan was released and is steadily gripping us with effortless singing, complimentary music and sad lyrics.

The song is beautifully sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, in a melancholic and mighty way wherein only Rahat can render a tune.

It is a tragic song, and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has done full justice to the myriad emotions the protagonist or the Heroine Kareena Kapoor is undergoing.

Rahat has given us a wide range on this song- with altering his voice to fit the hopelessness and heartbreak within the song.
Complete with difficult notes sung effortlessly by the talented singer, this song turns into the anthem of broken hearts.

The music is by the duo Salim-Sulaiman they usually have done justice to the grandiose expectations from the music of Heroine.

Use of multiple instruments, perfectly blended with an even voice and ryhtmic lyrics work well for the listener. The chorus of the song is lightly harking back to the movie Dor's Ye Haunsla, but in an even way

The lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya, are simple and effective. He has given words to the complex feelings of being lost, and eventually surrendering yourself to destiny, or the next power.

Some of the phrases are common , like dil sheeshe ka toota aashiyaan re. But then he immediately gives us, ab kis disha jaoon, kit mai basera paaun, tu jo thaame sambhal jaoon and surprises us with the simplicity and meaning of his words.

The video of the song is its another plus point. The song, in an issue of about two minutes, conveys the emotional journey of Kareena, or the Heroine.

She is shown falling in love with Arjun Rampal, then ignored by him and again getting concerned with Randeep Hooda. She has portrayed the turmoil of the lack of love extremely well.

Often, she is asking at herself within the mirror, as though metaphorically reflecting upon her own life, enthusiastic about what all she has lost and searching deep within herself.

From the appearance of the song, Heroine may be one visual delight.

With the great looks of Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Randeep Hooda- this movie may be a treat for the eyes.

Bollywood spies

By Hindustan Times

Agent Vinod (2012) has convinced me that similar to an anomaly called the Indian road, the Hindi spy thriller isn't going to save lots of the day. Indian cinema may well be going global and all that but some genres that just don't work of their current debased state.

Bollywood's spy game started long ago in 1967 with a surprise hit called Farz. A remake of a Telugu film, Feroz Khan refused the lead convinced that the film wouldn't ring a bell with the audience. Or even he didn't fancy the speculation of a superspy, Agent 116, being called Gopal. Written by Arudra and directed by Ravikant Nagaich, Farz was blessed with some great songs like Mast baharon ka main ashiq and Happy birthday to you Sunita that helped it becoming a large hit. Farz not just made Jeetendra a start but was also the primary big box-office success for the genre. It helped make the following few years extremely conducive for spy thrillers like Humsaya (1968), Aankhen (1968) and Yakeen (1969).

Agent VinodThe spy were around for over a decade since Samadhi (1950) where a British Agent spied on Indian National Army operatives however it was the arriving of James Bond together with the 2 wars the rustic fought within the 1960s that made them stand out. The implausibility of an Indian and Chinese resembling one another notwithstanding, Humsaya's plot pulled the entire stops to make it a rewarding watch. The spy thrillers and the horror films of the 1960s could be thematically different from the regular films of that period but they, too, were blessed with good music that helped them become popular.

Looking at Agent Vinod one can not help but feel disappointed. Agent Vinod tries to be a fine looking film where the master spy races around the former Soviet Union to outsmart some bad guys who've a nuclear bomb at their disposal but doesn't have anything beneath the skin. Within the four decades since Farz nothing much seems to have changed for the Hindi film spy and that's the reason a shame. What's concerning the genre that demands the hero to be nothing not up to an even looking, smooth talking cool guy? Of course, Agent Vinod can't escape the weight of being the long run custodian of the James Bond lineage but must he jump, shoot and dodge 1,000,000 bullets in pants tighter than Jeetendra's in Farz? Right from the outlet sequence where Vinod or whatever his name is, outsmarts the Taliban to the time he struts his way out and in of trouble across Russia, Morocco, Pakistan and plenty of more exotic places there isn't any single scene where the RAW agent looks as if he knows what the hell is occurring. To me it appeared like Agent Vinod was seeking to locate the closest men's room for all the 150 minutes of the film's screen time.

Cinematic spies run the chance of being flashy like Bond 303 (1985), Gunmaster G-9 in Suraksha (1979) and Wardat (1981) but there were films like Sharmilee (1971) and Sharara (1981) where the spy was the woman the hero loved. Ironically the ladies have all had interesting roles to play in earlier spy thrillers like Humsaya, Aankhen and Yakeen in comparison to Agent Vinod. Agent Vinod is an example of ways the folk who make films imagine their audience. They believe that we predict a spy must be good looking, fast talking, one-liner dropping dude who seems to spend more time trimming his beard than anything. Spy for Hindi cinema is a personality who can only be imagined in well-cut suits like Agent Vinod or like Sunny Ajay Chakraborty/ Arun Sharma /Major Batra/Wahid Deol in Hero- The affection Story of a Spy (2003). So, a Hollywood could be still seek its Alec Leamas within the Spy Who Came in From the Cold (1965), or George Smiley within the BBC's TV Series or the 2011 film version of John le Carre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy or Jason Bourne within the Bourne Series to balance the extremely suave and highly unreal James Bond but we would not be as inspired to do the similar. Not yet a minimum of. Strange as Bollywood doesn't wish to look far for inspiration; it just must pick up the newspaper and skim about real RAW Agents like Surjeet Singh who spent 30 years in a Pakistani jail.

Gautam Chintamani is an award-winning writer/filmmaker with over a decade of expertise across print and electronic mediums.
