Santiniketan wary about Tagore songs for IPL cheer

By Hindustan Times

As Kolkata Knight Riders’ cheerleaders gear as much as groove to Tagore songs in saris on the upcoming Indian Premier League, the Nobel laureate’s own land, Santiniketan, isn't happy about it. People within the West Bengal town, where Rabindranath wrote most of his literary classics, have slammed the
usage of his poetic pieces for entertainment.

“I am confused, amazed and wondering as to how Rabindranath Tagore’s songs will fit into this sort of commercial sporting event. Cricket, especially IPL, is all about frenzy and madness. I don’t think that is the proper platform to make use of his songs,” says Professor Samit Roy of Santiniketan’s world-famous Visva-Bharati University, which was envisioned by Tagore.

Professor Indrani Mukhopadhyay, principal of Sangeet Bhavan, Visva-Bharati, says, “I’m sceptical about their presentation. I'M HOPING they don’t do anything vulgar and even tamper with the tunes because Tagore songs don't seem to be for party dancing.” Dr Tarak Sengupta, vice-president of Sangeet Bhavan, adds: “I hope those cheerleaders don’t do anything that insults Tagore.”

KKR officials are however, upbeat. Venky Mysore, CEO of KKR, says, “This time, we just desired to add an overly local flavour (to the cheerleading). Playing Tagore songs is solely another step on this effort to maintain everything Bengali, and (the team’s owner, actor) Shah Rukh (Khan) was very passionate about this.”

I’m so homesick, says Imran Khan

By Hindustan Times

Good morning everyone! And good afternoon to these of you who had a late Friday night. I’m thrilled to be back writing my column after what looks as if forever. There’s quite a lot of new columnists, and that i appear to be the one veteran here, so I’d love to take this chance to provide my support to
anyone who needs it. I’ve been at this for a few years now, so I DO KNOW a number of adjectives and stuff.

Today, unfortunately, is a kind of days where adjectives fail me. (Also failing me today are adverbs, but all over the world they’re generally accepted to be the least trustworthy lexical category, so I can’t say I’m extremely surprised).

I’ve spent the past month shooting at the outskirts of Rajkot, in a spot called Wankaner. Most of you won’t be conversant in it, but there’s an especially large palace there, and it makes an attractive spectacular shooting location. The shoot’s been going well, no complaints there, but I MUST say I hate shooting clear of home. You spend a month, two months, sometimes even more, clear of family and friends. You reside in a hotel room (which will get pretty depressing), eating hotel food (which will get pretty heavy) and usually having no life besides work.

Working within the movie business is pretty consuming, and also you generally don’t get much free time… but no less than if you’re shooting in your house city, you get to return in your own house on the end of the day. You'll meet your pals a few times a week, and recharge your batteries (figuratively speaking).

All it is a long-winded way of explaining why adjectives (and people cursed adverbs) are failing me today… I’m utterly drained. I'LL really use some recharging. Looking ahead to hearing from you guys, maybe with some ideas on what I WILL write about for my next column?

Anupama Chopra's review: Blood Money

By Hindustan Times

Direction: Vishal Mahadkar
Actors: Kunal Khemu, Amrita Puri
Rating: **

At one point in Blood Money, the nasty boss of a diamond company gifts his protégé, Kunal, an expansive new office and a buxom secretary, with the instruction: Cabin aur Pauline, dono ka maza lo. It was my favourite of many unintentionally hilarious moments within the film.

Blood Money, like a couple of other Vishesh films (the Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt banner) before it, notably the match-fixing saga Jannat, is a morality tale in regards to the dangers of conspicuous consumption. Kunal, played by Kunal Khemu, is a middle-class MBA student who gets a role on the Trinity Diamond Company in Cape Town. We're told that it is the first time he's been on an airplane.

The company boss and his brother do not need much time to talk with him, however the newbie is given a furnished mansion to live in and cash to spend. Cut to: shopping, sightseeing and snazzy new car. Only his wife, Arzoo, played by Amrita Puri, wonders why the home reminds her of the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale, wherein the good old woman seems to be a witch.

'Witch' is a real understatement for Kunal's boss, 'Zaveri Sir', played by Manish Chaudhari, who's enthusiastic about every type of nefarious activities and is introduced to us as he drills a hole into his executive's leg. That is the primary scene of the film, so I AM NOT spoiling any mystery here. After Kunal clinches a large deal, Zaveri Sir takes him under his wing, this means that a lifetime of pool parties, private planes and a tryst at the conference room table with a horny co-worker. Of course, Kunal soon finds out that he has made a take care of the devil or, as he so originally puts it at interval point, "I sold my soul."

This standard issue plot worked much better in Jannat since the protagonist was edgier and the backdrop of match-fixing more intriguing. The arena of blood diamonds, as created by debutant director Vishal S Mahadkar here, is essentially comic-book. The screenplay is slowed down by songs and the couple's love story, which in fact takes a beating once Kunal starts to party with the boss. Kunal Khemu works hard to make his character's dangerous dilemma real however the situations he's installed are ludicrous. Within the climax, he sprints through Cape Town with a profusely bleeding stab wound and beats up some burly men for good measure. Funnier still are the villains. Zaveri Sir wears long coats, chomps on cigars and loves to say "superb" with a cruel curl of his lips, while his brother, played by Sandip Sikand, looks comically angry the entire time. Zaveri Sir could also be keen on pronouncements similar to "Imaandari aadmi ko mahal mein nahin, footpath pe le jaati hai."

Blood Money finds some traction within the climax but it's too little, too late. By then, you might be disengaged and debating dinner choices.

Katrina in awe of Yash Chopra's sharpness!

By Hindustan Times

Actress Katrina Kaif, who's back on the town from London after wrapping up a shooting schedule of Yash Chopra's directorial venture, says she is in awe of the veteran filmmaker's immensely sharp working style.

"You know Yash ji could be very senior and everybody used to mention how young he's at heart. But it's a must to have a look at how sharp he is," Katrina told reporters here.

"He used to select up these very small such things as... if something was disturbing me or I USED TO BE not in an excellent mood, he used to simply pick it up and understand how to cope with it. So I FEEL he's an overly special person and we had a terrific time," she added.

Katrina was in London to work on Chopra's yet-to-be-titled love story opposite superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

This is her first project with King Khan, and that is also the primary time she is being directed by Chopra, whose last venture behind the camera was Veer Zaara in 2004.

Katrina, 27, spoke at the sidelines of the launch of a book in response to her film Raajneeti, which presented her in a non-glamourous avatar and in a formidable role.

She didn't miss the danger to share sweet somethings about her Raajneeti director Prakash Jha too.

"One thing I WILL say about Prakash ji is that with all his knowledge and with all his intellect, he's an especially intelligent person and very knowledgeable...

"... especially at the subjects that he directs... (they can be) very complex subjects, but never for once does he make you're feeling that you're slightly inferior whatsoever to the information of politics or his knowledge of literature," said Katrina.

Last seen in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Katrina could also be working together with her former beau, actor Salman Khan in Ek Tha Tiger.

Critics' verdict: Blood Money fails to provoke

By Hindustan Times

For a film that may be set against the flourishing diamond industry and broaches on its grey zones, Vishesh Films' latest offering Blood Money is conspicuous by absence of detail and depiction. At the whole, this Kunal Khemu, Amrita Puri starrer is old wine with a brand spanking new label.

"Unexpectedly, from a credible, plausible zone, the film deviates right into a hard-to-absorb masala-ridden fare that will depend on heroism and intrepidness to prove some extent. A persuasive culmination, consistent with the quintessence of the film, would've only enhanced the impact of the second one hour. Wish the author was consistent in keeping the viewer absorbed within the subsequent hour as well," writes Taran Adarsh, Bollywood Hungama.

The execution of the film was lower than the mark. "Writer Upendra Sidhye’s story is believable however the execution barely rises above average. Director Vishal Mahadkar extracts decent performances from his cast. Kunal Khemu steals the show as a person caught in personal and professional conflict," feels Blessy Chettiar, DNA

The film also lacked research and detailing. "For a film that may be set against the flourishing diamond industry and broaches on its grey zones, Vishesh Films' latest offering is conspicuous by absence of detail and depiction. With out any research it isn't important whether the tale is about in South Africa or Surat," writes Sukanya Verma, Rediff.

"This one has the entire toppings of a 'Bhatt shocker' - drama, emotion, tragedy and a few sex. Again they push the bedroom threshold - a semi-erotic, steamy scene between two women - every man's turn-on fantasy. Debutant director, (Vishal S Mahadkar), tells the tale well, though some scenes are very stretched, and tries too hard to impress a reaction. A faster pace, stronger dialogues, to not add some more dum in Kunal's voice, and a greater background score - would have had greater impact," says Madhureeta Mukherjee, TOI.

Direction
"Debutant director Vishal Mahadkar had a gripping premise on hand, but what comes across on screen is a potpourri. A COUPLE OF absorbing, attention grabbing moments… a couple of hackneyed, tried and tested formulaic material. Resultantly, Blood Money is neither riveting, nor absolutely undistinguished. It floats somewhere in between!" Writes Adarsh.

"Kunal Khemu and Amrita Puri are ideal in character roles, heroine’s sister or hero’s insipid sidekick. But within the lead, two strugglers can’t make a crippled film walk. While the tale and screenplay do little to maintain you seated throughout, the dialogues surely deserve a Ghanta nomination. Following a bitter argument, Arzoo’s friend consoles her, saying, 'Jhagde toh hote hi hain hone ke liye.' Then there are pearls of wisdom like, 'Har deal mein do party hoti hain, ek buyer aur ek seller.' Quite just like the two parties within the hall playing ‘Blood Money’: the projectionist and the usher," writes Kunal Guha, Yahoo.

Performances
"Kunal Kemmu is super-confident and believable. The actor carries the movie on his shoulders, notwithstanding the discrepancies within the narrative. This could be a fresh beginning for this talented young man. Amrita Puri, who stood out with an excellent performance in AISHA, is natural to the core. She delivers a power-packed performance and elevates even a standard scene along with her splendid act," says Adarsh.

"Amrita Puri, for the primary time in a lead role after her impressive Aisha stint, is precisely okay. You wish to take her seriously but lines like “Tumhe mere saath Mumbai chalna hoga. Main yahaan se vidhwa hoke nahi jaana chahti” ruin it can be. a greater script and we will be able to see if she will be able to work some magic at the big screen. Manish Choudhary as Zaveri/Zakharia is “superb”-ly annoying, while the actor playing his brother deserves to be shot for over-acting," feels Chettiar.

"Kunal Khemu displays not one of the charisma, intensity or vulnerability that validates his transition from an pleasant go-getter to a compromised coward. The young man's needless huffing, puffing and folding lips in exasperation only draw attention to his inadequacies. Co-star Amrita Puri publish a lovely show in Aisha together with her funny dialogue delivery. Seems that may be how she speaks. Because the Devil in a Diamond baron's disguise, Manish Chaudhary does well together with his analogies in a temporary lunch scene but is proscribed to sporting a threatening frown for the remainder of his role," avers Verma.

"Proving his acting calibre in Kalyug, Kunal Khemu was an excessively promising actor to this point. Khemu's earnest act in Blood Money can definitely fetch kudos for him. Amrita Puri though pleasant enough, doesn't get much scope within the movie," reports Oneindia.

Conclusion
"On the whole, Blood Money is old wine with a brand spanking new label. A GOOD and absorbing first hour coupled with soulful music are its aces, although the mediocre, outmoded writing within the post-interval portions leave you just a little miffed. At best, a good attempt!" Concludes Adarsh.

"The lead pair salvages the film to an extent, but a limited scope of the script binds them both from making it an entertaining trip. The out of sync sound in lots of scenes makes Blood Moneytechnically unstable. Add to all this innumerable songs," writes Chettiar.

"You should not have to be a diamond expert to inform a gem from a pebble. And so, unless stale stories, bad acting and bungled possibilities capture your fancy, Blood Money is way too sluggish, simplistic and boring to bother," says Verma.

Bollywood’s item queen, Malaika Arora Khan, has scored another hit number with Anarkali Disco Chali from the impending Housefull 2. And the song’s popularity have been instrumental in making the Super Fight League (SFL) organisers rope her in for a performance on the opening ceremony in Chandigarh on April 7.

“For me, the primary reason was SFL’s novelty factor. However the driver behind accepting the offer was the folk who're involved with the sporting event – Raj (Kundra), Shilpa (Shetty) and Sanju (Sanjay Dutt). I DO KNOW they all on a private level. So after they asked me to be part of the event, it went without saying that I MIGHT extend my support,” says Malaika.

Ask the ‘Munni badnaam hui…’ performer about her first gig as Anarkali and she or he chuckles, “I am looking ahead to it. After all, it will likely be my first live show with the song. My son (Arhaan) could also be very thinking about it. He actually desires to see some of the live fights too,” Malaika adds.

Bipasha Basu had performed on the mixed martial arts’ inaugural fight night on March 11 in Mumbai. Kundra explains why they didn’t book the Jism star for his or her opening ceremony too, saying, “Malaika has some great songs, is super sexy and, above all, an even dancer. We strive and select the most productive performers all of the time, and because it’s a televised event, we can’t repeat our entertainers.
That’s why Bipasha wasn’t chosen again.”

While her plate is full preparing for her upcoming live performance, Malaika may additionally be reprising her Munni avatar in Salman Khan’s Dabangg 2.

Ask her in regards to the item number and he or she says with a smile, “We haven’t taken a decision yet. So, I'D only say, ‘let’s wait and watch.’”

"You know Yash ji may be very senior and everybody used to mention how young he's at heart. But you must take a look at how sharp he is," Katrina told reporters here.

"He used to select up these very small such things as... if something was disturbing me or I USED TO BE not in a fair mood, he used to simply pick it up and understand how to cope with it. So I FEEL he's an overly special person and we had an excellent time," she added.

She didn't miss the risk to share sweet somethings about her Raajneeti director Prakash Jha too.

"One thing I WILL BE ABLE TO say about Prakash ji is that with all his knowledge and with all his intellect, he's an especially intelligent person and intensely knowledgeable...

"... especially at the subjects that he directs... (they can be) very complex subjects, but never for once does he make you're feeling that you're slightly inferior in any way to the information of politics or his knowledge of literature," said Katrina.

Last seen in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Katrina could also be working along with her former beau, actor Salman Khan in Ek Tha Tiger.

"Unexpectedly, from a credible, plausible zone, the film deviates right into a hard-to-absorb masala-ridden fare that depends on heroism and intrepidness to prove some extent. The 2 have shot a music video for his or her song 'Right Now, Right Now...' , which the filmmakers plan to make use of for promotions.

"Seeing the recognition of the song, Sajid Nadiadwala (producer, Housefull 2) came up with this idea. The song has become successful some of the youth. It feels great when people acknowledge your success," says Wajid, who shot the video at Chandivali Studio on Wednesday.

Though his brother Sajid has worked with actor Salman Khan within the film Wanted (2008), that is Wajid's first outing at the big screen. "When Sajid acted within the film, everybody asked me what I'D do next. That is the primary time I'M appearing with Sajid in any music video, though it's just made for the promotion of the film," says Wajid.

The duo is worked up on the prospect of starring in a video. Says Sajid, "The song has already got millions of hits on YouTube. It will likely be a treat for our fans to look us performing together."

Has this inspired the 2 to determine an independent album soon? "THE MARKETPLACE FOR independent albums may be very weak in India, so we are not planning that at this time," says Wajid.

"The valley was freezing. Bundled up in fur coats, we waddled around like penguins in knee-deep snow as Karan showed me the stairs he wanted. I told him that was exactly what he was not getting."

The two are best buddies and Farah admits that after they're shooting on outdoor locations, they spend numerous quality time together. "We're our own entertainment team at the sets and do not need anyone else," she laughs. The film is a campus romcom and in true Bollywood style, the men -Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra -were warmly wrapped up within the minus five degree temperature when facing the camera while female lead Alia Bhatt was shivering in tights and lightweight jackets.

"That's the bane of being a heroine. She has choreographed several romantic chartbusters, but insists that there is nothing 'filmi' in regards to the new track.

Bollywood beats in Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator trailer

By Hindustan Times

Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator trailer has just released and it's already trending on Twitter. Interestingly, the trailer of the spoof film plays to the very talked-about Bollywood song Mundiya Tu Bach Ke Rahi from the film Boom.

While Cohen is expectedly priceless within the character of General Shabazz Aladeen, a hybrid of General Muammar Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein, the film itself looks rather promising.

The video begins with renowned leaders like USA President Barrack Obama, USA Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and UK Prime Minister David Cameron calling for action against the 'tyrant', 'who must step aside'. What follows is an inspiring speech by General Aladeen, the dictator of the Republic of Wadiyan, which requires free press, fair elections and equal rights for wome...err...that's when the action begins.

While Mundiya Tu Bach Ke Rahi plays within the background, we get a glimpse what the dictator is in a position to. In a race where he himself calls the shots, literally, Aladeen randomly shoots at fellow competitors to make sure he wins the race.

The dictator is then invited to Big apple by the United Nations, in the event you please, to handle them. What happens as Wadiyan's dictator is unleashed on America. Watch the trailer to search out out.

Also seen within the film are Anna Faris in a brunette page-boy cut and Ben Kingsley, who plays a suspicious second-in-command to the overall. Incidentally, Hollywood star Megan Fox can be seen playing herself within the film.

The Borat star had generated a substantial amount of buzz in regards to the film and his character when he gate-crashed the 84th Academy awards ceremony in his 'Dictator' avatar. Interestingly, the official site of the film republicofwadiya.com has some interesting bios and links. A must-see.

The film will release on May 11.

Sonam Kapoor's fairytale days!

By Hindustan Times

In my really early years, once I was four or five years old, my mum would read out stories to me, and he or she wouldn’t finish them in order that I’d wish to hear the remainder of the tale the following time. That’s where my passion for books started — from my mum. I had an overactive imagination and he or she knew that well, so she figured that methods to channel it was through reading … I MAY use the stories to assume things. And it worked — whenever she read out a story, I grew really fascinated with how the remainder of it could unfold.

Back then, we weren't even allowed to observe TV and whenever I did, it was just Doordarshan at my naani’s place … Chhaya Geet, remember? That’s how I DO KNOW all old songs! So, since there has been little else to do, by the point I USED TO BE 8 or 9, I had read every Enid Blyton book, and the Nancy Drews and Hardy Boys too. I loved Malory Towers and so desired to go there.

And, I had this amazing teacher once I was in my pre-teens ... my elocution teacher. Once every month, she’d take us to a bookstore to pick out a book. I picked a Roald Dahl book, and fell in love with him. I also loved Charles Dickens and Rudyard Kipling and CS Lewis. And that i can still read Gulliver’s Travels and A BIT Princess and Panchatantra and Baital Pachisi.

All these books you read to your formative years, they provide you a way of empathy and a way of right and wrong. They offer you morals and ethics. While you read Black Beauty from the viewpoint of a horse, you realise you must respect an animal. While you read Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, you realise there are kids who're not as privileged as you. It takes you to a spot you wouldn’t have ever been to … like Alice in Wonderland makes you dream … maybe there’s a mystical place like that which really exists!

I always desired to be part of the Famous Five. I WISHED to be a detective, a teacher, and after I read Great Expectations, I WISHED to be a painter. Books open up this world to you… you're feeling you are able to do much more. I don’t know why today’s kids read strange books or simply don’t read!

I’m happy and single: Rihanna

By Hindustan Times

Rihanna, who recently made headlines for her alleged eight-week fling with Ashton Kutcher last December, didn't attempt to hide her disgust when a journalist quizzed her in regards to the rumoured romance.

At a London press conference for Rihanna’s new movie Battleship, the feminine reporter for British television network ITN the feminine reporter blatantly asked her concerning the status of her relationship, Contactmusic reported.

“You’re so good at connecting with people who I FEEL that we really feel we all know you. Things are clearly going brilliantly to your career. I just wondered if you're as happy for your private life, and can we see a definite Mr. Ashton Kutcher perhaps creating a trip over here?” the reported asked.

Clearly annoyed, the We Found Love singer gave her reply.

“Wow, how disappointing was that question?” Rihanna said.

When the mediator asked if she desired to move directly to the following question, Rihanna agreed "absolutely."

“I’m happy and I’m single, if that’s what you’re really asking,” she added.

Reports surfaced last week claiming Rihanna started seeing Kutcher - who split with wife Demi More last November - eight weeks ago after swapping numbers at a La house party.

Dhanush’s 3 now in Hindi too

By Hindustan Times

The Dhanush-Shruti Haasan Tamil film, 3, that opens on March 30, can be dubbed and released in Hindi in May. Shruti says they had no plans of doing this while they were shooting, however the success of Why this Kolaveri Di… opened the door to an all-India market. “And even if it’s set down South, I’m sure that Ram and Janani’s love story will transcend the language barrier,” asserts Shruti.

Ask whether Kolaveri… will now have a feminine version sung by her and she or he negates the speculation. “It wouldn’t slot in. Kolaveri… is the lifetime of 3 today, however the film has a soul of its own. There’s another song, Kannazhaga…The kiss of love, where you’ll hear me singing in Hindi too. It’s a duet with Dhanush.”

Even though for the last 665 days, she’s been completely concerned with acting, Shruti is a trained musician and lyricist along with her own band.

She’s even composed music for the Tamil remake of A Wednesday (2008). What’s her tackle super singer Dhanush? “For someone who's not trained, he's specialized. Kolaveri… is a funny, catchy song a few loser in love. We had a large number of fun recording it, but honestly no person believed it could become this sort of viral hit. Just goes to turn that Twitter, YouTube and Facebook have brought the sector closer.”

Meanwhile, Shruti is thrilled that her filmmaker-actor father, Kamal Haasan, who saw 3 at a distinct screening, liked it. “When both your parents (Kamal and Sarika) are National Award-winning actors, it’s understandable to be a bit jittery. I NEEDED my father to peer it not as a parent, but because I respect him as an actor. I MIGHT has been very disappointed had he dismissed it. For once, he went beyond Shruti, his daughter, and mentioned my character and the film. Now, I’m hoping my mother, who was very supportive, likes it too.”

Breaking Bollywood
Sivaji (2007) was some of the rare South films that was dubbed in Hindi and have become a blockbuster. And credit for that goes to the Boss. “Rajnikant is the one South star who sells. Sridevi and Jaya Prada used to of their prime, but that’s about it,” says trade analyst Amod Mehra, who zeroes in on Mani Ratnam’s Thalapathi (1991), dubbed and released in Hindi as Dalapathi, and Roja (1992) as two other Tamil films that made an impression within the city of Hindi films. These movies introduced Bollywood to filmmaker Mani Ratnam and composer AR Rahman. Mehra attributes the fashion of dubbing South films in Hindi to a dedicated market in small towns and the interiors for action films. He says, “For this audience, it makes no difference who the hero is, so long as the film packs a number of punches.”

Preity Zinta turns script-writer?

By Hindustan Times

She has just turned producer along with her upcoming film, Ishkq In Paris. Or even as Preity Zinta keeps herself busy with acting and running an IPL cricket team (Kings XI Punjab), it kind of feels she has added another feather to her cap. The actor has apparently tried her hand at co-writing the Prem
Soni-directed film, which he had originally scripted himself.

“Preity have been instrumental in completing the film’s story. So whether it was discussing dialogues or fleshing out scenes, she made every effort to bolster the script,” says Prem, who’s just returned from wrapping up the primary schedule in Paris.

Ask the director if the film is a duplicate — as reported — of Family Man (2000) and Before Sunset (2004), and he says, “That’s complete untrue. Also, I NEED to explain that it’s not an Indo-French collaboration. It’s a normal Bollywood film. The truth that it’s being shot in France and lines a couple of French actors doesn’t make it a foreign film.”

Deepika Padukone enters top ad league?

By Hindustan Times

The incontrovertible fact that she is without doubt one of the youngest leading ladies in Bollywood appears to be working wonders for Deepika Padukone at the present time. The most recent news is that the 26-year-old actor has apparently been signed on for a whopping sum of Rs 5 crore (for a year) by a well-liked soap brand she endorses.

The actor was the face of the wonder soap for nearly four years. Taking into account her youth connect, brand recall and long association with the brand, they apparently made her a proposal she couldn't refuse.

When contacted, ITC Limited that owns Fiama Di Wills refused to touch upon the figure. She stands for today’s woman’s innate confidence, style and taste.”

Industry experts also feel that the ‘youth factor’ works in Deepika’s favour in terms of ads. “It’s her biggest USP. Way to her age, she has numerous time to head within the industry. Sometimes its beneficial for actors as it also allows companies to strike up long-term deals with them,” says ad guru Prahlad Kakkar. However, consistent with Anita Nayyar, CEO, Havas Media, Deepika has mostly endorsed beauty and cosmetic brands. Calling them “safe options”, in comparison to Kareena Kapoor’s list, which incorporates a number of shoes, gadgets or even two-wheeler brands, she says, “Still, if she was signed on for an enormous sum, it’s not surprising. Brands generally want consistency.”

The actor’s latest pay cheque, meanwhile, has put her at the top of the charts within the ad world. Before this deal, she was within the category of actors who charge no more than Rs 3 crore for an ad. Industry estimates reveal that actor Katrina Kaif currently charges around Rs 4 crore, Kareena is paid about Rs 3.5-4 crore per endorsement and Priyanka Chopra around Rs 3-3.5 crore.

Vivek Oberoi to play Dawood in biopic

By Hindustan Times

Until a couple of days ago, actor Vivek Oberoi and director Sanjay Gupta were embroiled in a standoff over the role of Dawood Ibrahim in Shootout At Wadala. Sanjay called the star “a joke”, Vivek stated that he read the script but “didn’t just like the role at all”, and had no option but to show it down.

And now, while Sanjay ropes in Sonu Sood to play the gangster in his sequel to Shootout At Lokhandwala (2007), in accordance with the lifetime of gangster Manya Surve, Vivek is readying to behave in Bollywood’s first-ever biopic of Dawood that’s prone to start sometime next year.

The actor is adept at bringing underworld dons to the massive screen. He started his career with a gritty portrayal of Chandu Nagre — supposedly in response to don Chhota Rajan — in Ram Gopal Varma’s Company (2002) followed by a menacing Maya Dolas in Shootout At Lokhandwala.

Producer Amit Chandrra — who's producing Vivek’s upcoming Kismat Luv Paisa Dilli (KLPD) also starring Mallika Sherawat — will back the brand new biopic too. The film aims to solve what gave the gangster cult status, besides showcasing his human side.

“The makers are yet to start out their research for the film. Plans were afoot to start the project sometime in 2012, but since Vivek is caught up with back-to-back films this year, they have got pushed it to 2013,” says an insider as regards to Chandrra. “Amit isn’t in a rush either, since any such project will need extensive homework.”

Vivek’s choc-a-bloc date diary includes films like Krrish 3, Zilla Ghaziabad and Kumar Taurani’s next. When contacted, Chandrra — busy with the post production and editing of KLPD — confirms: “It’s an idea we're all very excited about, but things are still at an overly nascent stage. Let’s see the way it goes.”

On Monday afternoon, Mumbai was reeling under the scorching sun. But a nondescript lane in Khotachiwadi, Girgaum, experienced rains way to a faux drizzle sequence for Kumar Taurani’s next. Tentatively titled Jayanta Bhai, it features Vivek Oberoi and Neha Sharma.
Once we reached the sets amidst a clutch of heritage homes, a drenched Vivek was busy testing his sequence at the monitor, whilst wife Priyanka ate her bowl of pomegranate. The shot in question had Neha running out within the rain, with an umbrella in her hand, before stopping to strike up a talk with Vivek.

“My character is a gangster, but he’s not within the same bracket as Chandu (Company, 2002) or Maya (Shootout At Lokhandwala, 2007). He's a loveable person, who likes to speak in English even though it’s broken and wrong,” says Vivek with a laugh.

Despite the long wait and hot weather, quite a lot of fans, including older women and kids, lined as much as take a sneak peek. All this, as debutant director Vinnil Markan calmly checked out the entire shots at the monitor, while instructing his production team at the minutest of details like Vivek’s hair and Neha’s umbrella. Once the combo shot was okayed, Vivek stepped right into a corner and the unit moved the set around. Neha went in for a break. Soon, a production member informed Vivek of a running sequence throughout the lane. As we were about to leave, a production guy offered Vivek a couple of green chappals, however the actor checked out his blue slippers and said: ‘Yeh continuity ki chappal hai, beta. (These chappals are supposed to be worn for continuity of the scene.)’

Bollywood’s other Dawoods
Akshay Kumar’s character in Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2 is supposedly according to the D Company leader, but will reveal his romantic side.

Sonu Sood will play Dawood in Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala, retelling the gangster’s many brushes with rival Manya Surve within the ’70s.

Emraan Hashmi portrayed Dawood’s rise to power in Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai... (2010). Ajay Devgn’s brooding and rugged character of Malik in Ram Gopal Varma’s Company was also apparently inspired by the feared don.

Let's speak about sex: Kalki Koechlin

By Hindustan Times

I watched Umrao Jaan yesterday. The old version. With Rekha Ji, who hasn’t earned the title Ji just because of her long years in films but in addition as a result of her perfectionist attitude to acting. She’s sublime and mature on this film despite being young on the time.

The film itself is a ‘grown up’ film, potent and tough hitting, stating the facts of lifetime of this young girl who was sold into prostitution. Though the film did average on the box office, it got critical appreciation and turned a classic. (THERE HAS BEEN the remake in 2006, which did poorly on the box office and wasn’t viewed highly by critics either).

It made me think, why, 30 years down the line, is it still difficult to make a movie like Umrao Jaan? Why will we have such trouble portraying prostitution or sex in a mature and easy way?

Sure, we’ve learnt to be ‘bold’. Learnt to turn off long legs in hot pants and using bad language with attitude. However the subject of sex continues to be taboo. Today, a movie can show girls in little or no clothing and men in tight pants gyrating in an item number and that’s accepted as a ‘family’ movie. But a lady and a man fully dressed talking about sex? Now that’s an adult movie. That doesn’t make sense to me.

Sex is everywhere. We didn't get to a population of over a thousand million by wearing bikinis. We got there wearing sarees, salwars, burqas, dhotis and kurtas. It doesn’t matter how covered up we're or aren’t, we're humans and that involves sex.

If a film like Umrao Jaan 30 years ago could speak about sex so explicitly without really showing any skin, what are we doing today after we show only skin and refuse to speak about sex? I don’t know, but something seems off. Maybe what we actually like is to disregard life around us, and dream about things we don’t have. Maybe because today, growing capitalism has taught us to wish what we don’t have. Maybe that’s why gutsier films were made 30 years ago, when it was not really easy to survive credit cards, EMIs and social networking to live our dream life. Maybe 30 years ago, real life needed to be faced. What do you think?
