Rekha to star in Umrao Jaan sequel?

By Hindustan Times

The makers of the Rekha-starrer 1981 film Umrao Jaan, are contemplating to make a sequel to the unique film. Umrao Jaan, which was directed by Muzaffar Ali, was in line with the Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada (1905), written by Mirza Hadi Ruswa.

The film was in keeping with the lifetime of famous Lucknow courtesan. Rekha's performance because the central character within the film had won her first National Award.

Now, director Muzaffar Ali and some of the writers of the film Javed Siddiqui are contemplating to make a sequel.

"We have two story ideas that we're engaged on. One apparently has nothing to do with Umrao Jaan however the film is ready within the same period...it is ready aftermath of first freedom struggle. The opposite idea is to have a sequel to Umrao Jaan," writer Javed Siddiqui told PTI.

"As in spite of everything we've shown that she (Rekha) involves her kotha and we've not shown what will happen to her within the English regime, how she behaves and what happens to her. So we've a narrative wherein we now have Umrao Jaan as an older and more mature person... so this may be shown. But we do not know if this may happen or not," he said.

It is the producer-director Muzaffar Ali, who would take a last call on this matter. "NOW WE HAVE set to work on both the scripts. Both the choices (scripts) are good. I FEEL the verdict should happen in few days as to if we'd go along with the brand new story line or a sequel," Siddiqui said.

In 2006, filmmaker JP Dutta had pop out with the remake of Umrao Jaan with Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan within the lead roles. However, the film had failed miserably on the box office.
