Kamal Haasan set for Hollywood debut

By Hindustan Times

After earning popularity and demanding acclaim in his native land, veteran Indian actor Kamal Haasan is able to go international. He'll make his Hollywood debut with The Lord of the Rings producer Barrie Osborne, who hopes to inform an Indian story in Hollywood style.

Kamal and Osborne announced their tie-up on the ongoing International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) weekend here.

The actor-filmmaker is asking forward to working with Osborne, who he says has worked with "champions of Hollywood."

"The world has seen his work. You retain doing labor but you aren't sure whether it is good work. It's only after people like Barrie approach you and make you realise," said the 57-year-old.

"The lineage that Barrie comes with is on the subject of my heart. All of the heroes that I'VE looked as much as have worked with him. He has worked with champions of Hollywood like Cappola (Francis Ford Coppola)," he added.

Some of Osborne's notable works include The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Waterhorse, The Warrior's Way and The Prophet.

Osborne hinted that the project with Haasan can be a mixture of Indian and western sensibilities. "We plan to inform the tale of Indian history and tradition in Hollywood style," he said.

The international filmmaker says Kamal is sort of a cinema encyclopedia. "It was a pleasure to fulfill Kamal (Haasan) through the years. Recently, he came to Hollywood to perform a little of his work on his new film Vishwaroopam. I USED TO BE invited to look the film and that i was impressed. After that we started talking concerning the idea to interact. It's such an honour to grasp him because his knowledge of literature and flicks is like that of an encyclopedia," Osborne said.

"We began to speak about the potential for working together and explore different avenues. Kamal presented an idea to me that I felt was compelling," he added.

Asked in regards to the more or less projects they're planning to work upon, Haasan says they're yet to make your mind up upon it. "WE'RE still developing the theory. It's a world movie involving the sector. Now we have just decided that we'd interact. As an actor I'll do it, as a writer I'll do it, and if he needs me to direct it, I'll do this also," he said.
