It may be raining films in Bollywood, this monsoon, with a bunch of giant and small budget films lined up for release between July and September. The industry has around Rs. 500 crore riding on it, and trade analysts say that business looks good.
The lineup includes big banner movies reminiscent of filmmaker Homi Adajania’s Cocktail starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, Kabir Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger with Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif within the lead, Madhur Bhandarkar’s much-awaited, Kareena Kapoor starrer Heroine and Preity Zinta’s comeback film, Ishkq In Paris.
“I see great business this upcoming season with some films crossing the Rs. 100 crore mark,” says trade analyst, Taran Adarsh.
Adult film star Sunny Leone could also be set to make her Bollywood debut with Jism 2 this monsoon.
Other small-budget films similar to Anand Kumar’s Zila Ghaziabad and Vikram Bhatt’s Raaz 3 may also tackle big-ticket competitors.
Meanwhile, film critic and writer, Anupama Chopra points out that women-oriented films will take center-stage this quarter. “After the success of The Dirty Picture and Kahaani, it might be interseting to peer how women-centric films fare on the box office. Also, with such a lot on offer, it’s a win-win situation for everyone, including the viewers,” she says.
Monsoon hits in 2011
Last year, from July to September, 35 films released — both big budget and small budget. The movies that made big bucks included Imran Khan starrer Delhi Belly, Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara — which starred Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol, Ajay Devgan’s Singham and Salman Khan’s Bodyguard
