While Bollywood has explored practically every aspect of conflict in its movies — from wars to riots to communal tensions — it hasn't ever featured the North East regardless of the worries there. Why is that this so?
Aamir: On a certified level, I BELIEVE all filmmakers (and people in other creative art forms) have every right to make a choice what they would like to do with their creativity. Cinema is to entertain and never educate. However, on an individual note, I NEED to look topics, stories and powerful characters emerging from North-East India in mainstream cinema.
It’ll be a treat to look at such stories at the 70mm screen. In case you remember, I took up an unusual character in 3 Idiots called Phunsuk Wangdu. I applaud Raju Hirani who digressed from the mainstream and made a Ladakhi his central character.
Why don’t Bollywood filmmakers expand their horizons and search for actors from the North-East, in place of just those from the South and the North?
Aamir: Excellent idea and an implausible perspective! I certainly feel they have got a spot in mainstream cinema. The ladies have very expressive eyes and the blokes with high cheekbones are very handsome. I NEED to send out a message that the entire of India has to be informed so much from this a part of the country.
