Akshay Kumar has made a smashing comeback to the action genre. While the central plot is commonplace, the screenplay packs an excellent punch. The movie bestows Akshay with abundant opportunity to flaunt each shade of his skill, say critics.
"Vivid colors, rustic background and standard dance routines... Rowdy Rathore follows the prevailing trend to create more homespun, home-flavored desi movies in place of pursue the money-spinning NRI souk that has, until recently, been the order of the day. While the central plot is pretty commonplace, the screenplay packs a high-quality punch, with several clap-trap situations interlaced within the narrative, though it slips into the knowable zone at times," says Taran Adarsh, Bollywood Hungama.
"Sure, there are a couple of limp moments, but a swift narrative outweighs this inadequacy. Besides, stability is maintained in both halves of the film. While the primary hour of the film is replete with entertainment, the second one half gets into the action mode [the flashback portions are outstanding], however the entertainment values are maintained on the same level. This one is the emblematic formula movie with distinct essentials that Indian masses yearn for," he adds.
"After tickling the audiences together with his wit and humour for years, now our own Khiladi Akshay Kumar is back with raw action in his latest release Rowdy Rathore. Directed by the dance guru Prabhi Deva, Rowdy Rathore is a remake of the Telugu blockbuster Vikramarkudu. Rowdy Rathore is a full-blown masala entertainer, as a way to surely impress you with Akki's desi punches, colourful songs and plenty of romance," reports OneIndia.com.
"Rowdy Rathore gets full marks at the entertainment factor and everything related to it. The standard of the script? Never mind! If the 'package' is all that matters in Bollywood, then Rowdy Rathore couldn't have got a greater wrapper -- it's shiny, it's colorful and it gets your attention right from the primary scene," writes Soumyadipta Banerjee, In.com.
Not all critics agree though. Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV says: "Rowdy Rathore is a shrill action flick designed to assist Akshay Kumar return to his hit-making ways. Accept that obvious intent and also you might actually finally end up enjoying certain parts of the film against your individual better counsel. Isn’t that the effect that many a Bollywood potboiler of the 1980s would have on us?"
Strong screenplay
"The screenplay, in keeping with the Telugu hit, is commonplace but entertaining in parts. Especially, the comedy scenes work well with the audiences. The initial component to the drama, when Shiva’s character is being introduced, is gorgeous. Ditto for the pre-climax and the climax. The screenplay of the latter half is such that there's ample scope for action, which have been choreographed very well," writes Mrigank Dhaniwala, Koimoi.com.
Direction
"Prabhu Devaa’s direction is nice as he manages to make narrative fast-paced and fascinating for essentially the most part," says Dhaniwala.

Akshay Kumar
"Akshay Kumar is cast in a double role -- one as a cop and the second as a petty thief -- and both the jobs are custom-made for the endearing actor. As Shiva, he entertains the masses, whereas as Vikram Rathod, he aims at serious movie lovers. The movie bestows Akshay with abundant opportunity to flaunt each shade of his skill," says Adarsh.
Sonakshi Sinha
"Sonakshi plays a lovable, charming yet impish character rather well. You can see the voluptuous side of Sonakshi on this film and the nature she portrays has tremendous mass appeal. Also, the desi girl image suits her impeccably," writes Adarsh.
Naseeruddin Shah
"Nassar is excellent because the antagonist. Ditto for the actor who essays the a part of his brother. He's venomous to the hilt!" Feels Adarsh.
Other actors
"Mushtaq Khan provides a couple of laughs. Paresh Ganatra, as Akshay's buddy, is actually funny. Yashpal Sharma is first class. Gurdeep Kohli is first-rate. Anant Jog and Darshan Jariwala are adequate. The kid artist portraying the a part of Akshay's daughter is truly cute," says Adarsh.
Conclusion
"On the whole, Rowdy Rathore is designed to magnetize the loads in hordes. The accurate blend of action, emotions, drama and humor, besides a superlative performance by Akshay Kumar, makes this movie an immensely pleasurable and pleasant movie watching experience. For those who savor typical masaledaar fares, this one need to be for your have-to-watch listing for certain. Dhamaal entertainer!" Concludes Adarsh.
"Riddled with an array of loud, lame and specious contrivances, Rowdy Rathore plays out just about like a comic-book fantasy rendered within the type of a live-action film. Opt for it if you happen to must, but don’t expect the earth from it," says Chatterjee.
"On the whole, Rowdy Rathore is entertaining in parts. You’ll enjoy it in case you do not need too many expectations. Beware of the return of Akshay Kumar to a few serious comedy and action!" Concludes Dhaniwala.
