It’s official. Shekhar Kapur’s Mr India (1987) that had Anil Kapoor and Sridevi within the lead roles, goes 3D. The conversion will bring back to life scriptwriters Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar’s last work together.
A surprised Boney Kapoor is reluctant to comment, but reveals, “I was going to announce it a minimum of six months later. We commence the conversion process only in May, after the work on Spider-Man 4 is complete. The film may be ready for re-release in 2014, before the sequel of Mr India is out.”
The news of Mr India’s conversion comes close at the heels of James Cameron’s Titanic (1997), which was re-released in 3D recently. The film in regards to the maiden voyage of a doomed ship and its passengers hit theatres on April 10 and has grossed Rs. 18 crore so far.
According to Boney, Sahara Movies is serious about the 3D conversion of his science fiction film as a part of a three way partnership between Sahara Jeon Studio and GR8 studio, that is based in Vancouver. As a part of this arrangement, the corporate could also be engaged on the conversion of Spider-Man 4 and the Nicolas Cage starrer Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011). However, a source just about the production house says, “Yunus Bukhari of Art.ery animation & fx is already engaged on the initial conversion. Previously, his firm worked on films like Toonpur Ka Super Hero (2010), Devdas (2002) and Koi… Mil Gaya (2003). But he's going to not talk since he's under contract.”
Ask Boney why he decided to re-do the film, and he says, “Mr India was sooner than its time. Probably the most sequences aren’t easy to aim even today. The invisible man, Hanuman punching the villain, Mr India whipping a hunter and the late Amrish Puri because the legendary Mogambo are a few things so that it will look excellent in 3D. Then there are songs like Hawa hawaai…, Kaante nahi kat te… which are popular even today.”
But will Mr India also see the unprecedented success that the re-released Titanic saw?
Some youngsters already sound hooked. Gaurang Chariyo, 20, says he “would go together with his entire gang of friends to peer it” while 18-year-old Ojas Sharma says, “It can be such a lot fun to look Mogambo in 3D. Eagerly looking ahead to it! When will it come out?”
