Manmohan Desai introduced vanity vans in Bollywood: Amitabh Bachchan

By Hindustan Times

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who's back to work on the studios after recovering from his abdominal surgery, says vanity vans, which can be a typical possession these days, were the luxurious of a privileged few earlier.

The 69-year-old actor said that filmmaker Manmohan Desai had introduced the idea that of self-importance vans and gifted him one too.

"At the studios these days, the most important space is taken up by the self-love vans for artists, talent, directors, writers... It was never like this in our time... ok... like earlier days! Now and then for an all night shoot, you simply dozed off at the floor of the set... getting a room was a luxury.

"But Manmohan Desai, the master, was different. He had a back problem and had to lie down as he travelled to the sets, so he built himself a van where a bed may well be placed and submit a television set inside, something that was unheard of...," the 69-year-old posted on his blog.

"And then within a couple of days presented me with one. It was not what vanity vans are like today... I installed a pull out make up tray with mirror, to do my make up in there and desperately tried to mend a music system within," he added.

Bachchan had teamed up with the maverick director many a times and delivered hits in Mard, Coolie, Naseeb and Amar Akbar Anthony.
